ISLAMIC MILITANTS ATTACK CATHOLIC
CHURCH IN MALAYSIA
Last Sunday, Our Lady of Lourdes
Catholic church in Ipoh, Malaysia was "surrounded
and attacked by about 1,000 Islamic
militants". As reported by CWNews, the militants
were protesting over what was thought to be the
baptism of Muslims who were converting to the
Christian faith. The information turned out to be
false, but the police had to break up the
demonstration.
What is troubling about this development is that
Malaysia has large minorities of Indians and
Chinese, many of whom are Christian; and,
until recent years, Islamic radicalism has had
minimal influence in that generally Muslim country.
At the same time, however, the Malays (who are
Muslims and make up the majority of the population
in Malaysia) are not permitted to attend
Christian services or convert to Christianity. If
they want to do so, they had better leave the
country.
That so many Islamic militants were poised to do
great damage to (and perhaps even destroy) a
Christian church in Ipoh is a troubling
development, in a country where Christian-Muslims
relations have generally been good.
