BUTTERWORTH, June 6 (Bernama) -- Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) Sdn Bhd, which allegedly used imported pipes for its government-funded water pipe replacement project in breach of Treasury instructions, has been told to give an explanation or face stern action.
Energy, Water and Communications Minister Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said action, which might include revoking its concession, would be taken if the company was found to have violated the pipe replacement conditions intentionally.
He said an initial investigation found Syabas used pipes and components imported from Indonesia to replace old pipes at Medan Athinahapan in Petaling Jaya.
Syabas also sourced the pipes and components from only one supplier, he told reporters during a visit to the Petro-Pipe Industries Malaysia Sdn Bhd plant here Monday.
Dr Lim said the action by Syabas breached conditions in Treasury Circular No. 7 which stipulated that only local products be used in the pipe replacement project and supplies should be sourced through open tenders.
He said the ministry would ask Syabas to give an explanation on the matter as soon as possible.
"The ministry has the right to terminate the Syabas operation if it failed to give an explanation," he added.
He said he had directed his officers to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
The issue arose following a complaint made to the ministry by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers.
Dr Lim also questioned the way Syabas had awarded its tender for supplies as it had not received the approval of the Finance Ministry.
