Liberalism And Pluralism Taking Roots In Malaysia
IPOH, June 12 (Bernama) -- Do not let liberalism and pluralism
destroy Islamic values, the Mufti of Perak Datuk Seri Harussani
Zakaria urged Monday.
He said unfettered liberalism and pluralism could be harmful to
Malaysian society in the long run.
He pointed out that discourses on polygamy, faraidh system, the
Quran, setting up of inter-faithcommission and abolishment of
Article 121 (1A) of the Federal Constitution, were getting
louder as more Malaysians embraced liberalism and pluralism.
He said Indonesia experienced the same phenomenon some 30 years
ago.
"If left unchecked, liberalism and pluralism will be difficult
to control," he said when speaking at the Ulamak 2006
Convention, here today.
Experts on the issues who include Assoc Prof Dr Anis Malik Toha
from the Islamic International University (UIA) and Adnin Armas
from the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thoughts and
Civilisation (INSISTS) will present working papers at the
two-day convention.
Harussani also proposed that Muslim countries set up a body to
monitor the penetration of western thinking and culture.
The convention, held in conjunction with the Sultan of Perak
Sultan Azlan Shah's 78th birthday, was officiated by Raja Muda
of Perak Dr Raja Nazrin Shah.
The convention was attended by Members of Parliament and State
Assemblymen from Perak, Muftis from across Malaysia, religious
officials and representatives of non-governmental organisations.
